Senate candidate Matt Bevin (R-Ky.) said Monday he will run for the presidency in 2020, but will stop short of announcing his bid.
He said he’s “a little bit surprised” he won’t be announcing his run until January.
“I’m glad that I’m going to be a candidate for president,” Bevin told reporters at the Kentucky Derby.
“I just hope I can be a good president.
I hope I will be a successful president.”
Bevin, who announced his candidacy last week, has been one of the most outspoken opponents of President Donald Trump’s policies on gun control.
He has also pushed back on the notion that his own race could influence Trump’s reelection chances.
In the Republican primary, Bevin finished third in the GOP primary with 19 percent of the vote.
