How to make the most of your first-round draft pick by selecting a quarterback, receiver or offensive lineman with your first pick?
That’s what I did in my first round with the Raiders.
The Raiders drafted wide receiver Damaris Johnson and center Ryan Ramczyk in the first round.
But my first-rounder selection also included cornerback Jamarca Sanford, offensive tackle Tyler Patmon and safety Michael Huff.
The first pick was very good for me, especially with the fact I had some high-profile draft picks on the board.
And it was the Raiders first-ever first-overall pick, so I was a big fan of that.
In hindsight, I could have been more aggressive.
But that was just my mindset.
It wasn’t a conscious decision.
I think I was one of the first people to get on the phone with Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio and he told me, “You can’t do this.
I don’t want you to draft this guy.”
He told me it was a mistake.
I thought, “This is crazy.
I’m going to be able to pick this guy, and he’s going to get drafted by the Raiders and it’s going the right way.
I just want to do it for my own sake.”
I was like, “Oh, well, then it’s OK.”
I knew it was my own fault because I could’ve picked the quarterback in the second round.
Instead, I went with the offensive lineman.
It was a great pick because the Raiders had three of them in the draft.
And I knew I could pick him up in the third round.
I was still a fan of what I saw, and the Raiders gave me my first pick, but it was disappointing.
The thing I like about the Raiders was that they’ve been able to put the franchise on the map.
That was my first goal.
The first thing I want to accomplish is to build on the success they’ve had in Oakland and be a success in Los Angeles.
My first year was really difficult.
We lost in the divisional round of the playoffs.
I went into that year with a sense of disbelief because I didn’t think I would get to play in the playoffs, but after the first year, I thought it was possible.
I felt like we had a shot.
I know this was going to take some time to build off, but I feel like I’m building from a place of confidence and getting better and stronger every day.
I can’t wait to get back to Oakland and get started in the season.
